Flamingos

Flamingos is a solo piano work that strives for a humorous angle as clusters of tones focus the listener’s ear towards the rhythmic pulses and patterns that emerge and coalescence into a wild romp across the full extent of the keyboard. It is a joyful, jolly piece centered around the idea that quiet and non-lyrical patterns of muted chromatic clumps of notes suddenly appear and quickly dissipate like wisps of smoke and reappear elsewhere on the piano like a pet animal would be jumping up and down excitedly on the keys. With out-of-time and asymmetrical time signatures, the piece captures that ambient feeling of listlessness and gleeful, unexpected fun, while also giving the pianist a challenge and a new way to play music – with handfuls of notes instead of the accuracy of defined pitches and the intent focused instead on quietness, speed, and rhythmicity.
