‘Frontline Mission’ begins with a propulsive strings (and doubled in the woodwinds) ostinato figure based around a minor third, this driving and interesting texture then becomes an accompaniment to a powerful French horn figure that enters with the timpani, harp, and suspended cymbal making it a dramatic statement that sustains as three trumpets play the ostinato figure and give added intensity and orchestral depth. Soon, all the strings play off the string as all four French horns continue the long melodic line against shifting harmonies and vigorous energy in the rest of the orchestra. As this texture quiets, unison violins play a second theme high, as French horns later play a counter-melody. Sustained and smooth textures that are played as the established figurations of sixteenths are continued in some part of the orchestra. The movement concludes with a dramatic crescendo in the entire orchestra and as the churning ostinato continues until the piece’s final, abrupt into utter silence.
