The Holly and the Ivy (vers. 1)

The Holly and the Ivy (orch. March 2008) is a 3’30” arrangement for orchestra only which takes the popular 3/4 time public domain carol through over a dozen variations in it’s 8-bar tune in several variations in texture, orchestration and density.  The brief interludes which wind the carol through the passing key changes and harmonizations serve to add interest to what is otherwise a repeated 8-bar phrase that would become stagnant after only a few hearings.  In this arrangement, every woodwind has a solo and the harmonizations side-step through a variety of keys, some of which provide a misleading anticipation to underpin an added interest.  Thoughtfully crafted and orchestrated to provide maximum clarity to the lines this arrangement is a new approach to the favorite holiday hymn.
