Silent Night (arr. 2007) is an arrangement for orchestra and an optional solo singer in Db major of the popular public domain carol. The vocal melody is cued for a Flute solo in lieu of a singer. This arrangement is a simple setting of this beautiful classic carol that puts the melody in contrasting beautiful and delicate textures with interesting extended harmonies that quietly shift at key moments of slight dramatic tension in this twice repeated arrangement of the carol. Largely feeling like a lullaby, the piece embodies a feeling of warmth and Christmas throughout. This arrangement ends as it began in a bookend shape, with the opening simple gestures and soft whispers and concludes with a mysterious and questioning shape in the solo Celesta rising upwards like a gentle prayer in a dark, silent, wintery night.
