Away in a Manger (orch. Aug. 2006) is a small scale arrangement for orchestra and optional singer (the solos are doubled in the orchestra parts) based on one of the most popular public domain, late-nineteenth century Christmas Carols. This intimate portrait uses deft and quiet String tremolos, plenty of Celesta and Harp upward arpeggiations and easily gliding runs that sweep along the contrasting lyrical descending melody. Scored for a small ensemble with few players, it complements an accompaniment for a particularly young singer to sing with in the keys of F major and later modulating to D major. This is a quiet and childlike impressionistic arrangement that is quiet, mellifluous and shimmering.
