39. On the Steps of Viale Glorioso, 6.53

On the Steps of Viale Glorioso (composed June 2014) is an emotional orchestral work, distinctive in its expressionism, accessible and executed with a highly dramatic intensity that examines the sentimentality of the Sergio Leone marked steps in Rome seen daily during residence at the American Academy in Rome in 2012-3. It is a symphonic music with poetic lyricisms that is ear-catching and in its best moments quite haunting and thoroughly compelling. Operatic in its long-limbed melodic treatments, it simultaneously is broadly epic and intimate with personal melodrama, that is emotional and emotionally charged to its core. This passionate new work, cinematic in its orientation, is at once direct and smooth, with a melodic score that is satisfying, distinctly American and impressively soaring.
