36. Chinoise, 4.37

Chinoise (composed October 2013) is an evocative piano solo written in tonal and cinematic conceit that is characterized by passionate surges of undulating left hand accompaniments in 12/8 and long melodic lines that are expansive, reflective and haunting.

There is a strong French pervasiveness in this seemingly pentatonic piece (hence the French pronunciation of the word “Chinese“) that depicts the work as a musical drama unfolding with clear representational imagery and redolent abstract patterns of beautifully shimmering textures and designs that fill the instruments full range.  It speaks a language of freely fluid, un imposed restraint, shifting from one expressive melodic utterance to another more ornamental and passionate phrase with chromatic roots in Hollywood lyricism and searching surges of dazzling and stylistic impressionism.
